St Teresa of Calcutta

Welcome to Saint Teresa’s Class Page!

“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Colossians 3:12

Who is St Teresa of Calcutta?

St. Teresa of Calcutta, also known as Mother Teresa, was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to serving the poorest and most vulnerable. Born in 1910, she moved to India and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Her work focused on caring for the sick, dying, orphaned, and abandoned. With deep faith and unwavering compassion, she became a symbol of selfless love, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and later being canonised as a saint in 2016.

Her Core Values
  • Compassion: Loving and caring for those who suffer, especially the forgotten;

  • Humility: Living simply and serving without seeking recognition;

  • Faith: Trusting in God’s providence, even in spiritual darkness;

  • Dignity of Life: Valuing every human being as made in the image of God;

  • Service: Putting love into action through daily acts of mercy;

  • Sacrifice: Giving up comfort to be present with the suffering;

  • Peace: Promoting harmony through love and forgiveness.

St Theresa is of particular importance to us in Year 2 as, within our History curriculum provision, we learn about Never Forgotten Nurses - with Mother Teresa of course being a hugely influential figure in medicine. Not only that, but as a class, we endeavour to practise her core values of faith, compassion, peace and dignity each day.
Who will be teaching your child this year?
Miss Rebecca White

Year 2 Class Teacher

My name is Miss White and I am delighted to be the Year 2 teacher at St Joseph's. It is wonderful to teach a class of such aspirational, motivated and hard-working children, and I am looking forward to seeing what they can achieve over the next year as they strive to be the best they can be.

When I am not in school, I enjoy reading, spending time with my family and friends and discovering new crafts!

Routines in Year 2
  • Homework will be set on a Friday. This will include: Spellings. These will need to be practised at home ready for a test every Thursday. Reading, Writing and Maths homework will also be set on alternate weeks. This all needs to be completed and handed back in on the following Wednesday.
  • Once per term, the children will also have Religious Education homework.
  • PE will happen every Wednesday and Friday - Please come to school in your PE kit.
  • Reading at home is really important for all children. Children will be rewarded with a Reading Point if they read at home five times per week.
  • Each week, a child will bring home our class Prayer Bag. Within the bag, you will find a cloth (linked to our Liturgical Season), prayers and religious objects linked to the time of the year. Please use this to pray together as a family.
  • Please take a look at our class blog to see what we have been up to!
What is it like to be a child in Year 2 at St Joseph's?
When your child reaches Year 2, they are in their final year of Key Stage 1. With this, comes responsibility and they are expected to have consistently high expectations of themselves, being outstanding role models for the rest of the children within the EYFS and Key Stage 1 phase.

The children continue to grow in their faith by embedding Catholic Social Teaching in their daily lives, rooted in scripture. Children have shown that they are Stewards of the Earth, doing everything they can to look after God's creation.

My hope for the children within my class is for each child to feel valued, feel they have a voice and to have the confidence to always be the best they can be. The children work incredibly hard throughout the school day, following a similar timetable every day. This includes:
Group Reading, Maths, Phonics, Celebration of the Word, Writing, Maths on Track and Topic work.

The children in Year 2 are exposed to the teachings of Jesus through a range of subjects such as Religious Education; Relationships and Health Education (RHE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Edcuation. We teach children how to show love to thy neighbour, showing empathy and kindness to all around them, just as Jesus has taught us to do.

In May, towards the end of the academic year, our fabulous Year 2 children have the opportunity to complete quizzes to showcase just how wonderful they are. The children will complete the quizzes for Reading; Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG), Arithmetic and Reasoning. These are used to confirm the assessments Miss White has made throughout the school year but she knows it's only a tiny part of who we all are as people. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to explore our gifts and talents throughout the school year, having the confidence to try new things and to always have resilience.
