Summer 1 2026

Week beginning 4th May

Year 5 blog

In French, we have been looking at different weather. Our favourite is "Il pleut" which means it's raining! Luckily there hasn't been a lot of "pluie" this week!!

In Geography, we made paper fortune tellers that look like little volcanoes. This will really help us learn about the structure of the volcano! Our homework is to make a proper volcano that we can "erupt" with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar!

In gardening, it was seed planting day! Let's hope they grow!

On Friday, we had a singer come and work with us called Mr Robinson. He taught us a hymn and some really funny warm ups!

In English, we have been learning about ellipsis and short sentences for effect. This will make our writing very exciting and will help us improve our cliff hangers. We had a story to watch from Literacy Shed which we then retold. Our stories are VERY good. Be prepared....

See you next week!

Gosh, where did this week go?!

The children have been working very hard in their lessons and time just seems to be flying past!

The 29th was a special day for our class as it was St Catherine of Siena's feast day! We went to Mass on Thursday to celebrate this, and the children helped me deliver an assembly about her. They also did model examples for the rest of the school so that the feast day could be commemorated in the prayer books.

In Maths, I am blown away by the children's resilience as we tackled subtracting fractions. Once the steps were embedded though, they were off and flying! Learning about fractions is so important in readiness for Year 6, so I am so pleased to see them working hard with it.

In Geography, we continued learning about volcanoes. We learned about plate tectonics and how the movement of the plates caused different natural events. The children are bursting with curiosity about the world around them which is really pleasing to see.

In PE, we have been looking at jumping and running to help the children aspire to represent their school in District sports. The children have been taking this very seriously which is going to make the Leadership team's decision very hard! The technique shown by the children is exemplary; glad it isn't me making the final choice!

Next week we have lots of other exciting things to do- Year 5 will be back to tell you all about it :)

Year 5 Trip blog

On Monday, we took a 48 minute coach trip to the Holst Museum in Cheltenham!
When we were on the coach, we were fantastically behaved- and we spent most of the time singing a variety of songs. Even the coach driver joined in!

When we got to the museum, we were divided into two groups. One group went to do the music workshop and the other group got a tour of the house.

In the music workshop, we played chime bars to Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. We learned how to play chords; what ostinato meant and how to play in time. Some of us even got to be a conductor to help us keep the beat! We also looked at an old record player and heard some records from the 1920's.

Around the museum we saw the maid's bedroom which was SO small! The maid's bedroom also didn't have a fire so it would have been really cold in the winter! We also learned that there were no taps in the house, so the maid would have had to have gone to a well for water. We saw a very weird toilet too!!
In the nursery, we saw a Victorian dolls house and got to play with some of the toys.
We toasted bread on the kitchen range over the fire.

At the end, we got to try the gentlemen's hats and the maids outfits.

What a fantastic day!

Mrs Carr note:

The children represented the school impeccably- I was so proud of them!

Welcome back to the Summer term!
I cannot believe how quickly this year is going; it feels like only yesterday it was September!!

We have started this term full of high expectations! The children have been working so hard with everything: handwriting, grammar, presentation...I have been blown away by the change!

In PE, we had one last lesson of gymnastics with the focus of vaulting! The children had a go at vaulting onto a piece of apparatus with great success! I was really impressed with their confidence!

We have also started a maths unit on calculating fractions. The children have found the sticky knowledge really easy to remember- because the DENOMINATOR NEVER CHANGES! EVER!!

Next week, it will be all about our trip to the Holtz museum! Can't wait to tell you all about it!
