Week commencing 27.4.26
We’ve had another very busy and productive week in Year 6!
In DT, we evaluated our models in preparation for sharing them on Friday. We had a great time showing our learning to our buddies, although we definitely had to dig deep with our resilience as there were quite a few circuit problems along the way. Perseverance paid off!
In English, we finished writing our poems. Some of these were absolutely fantastic and really showcased how creative free verse poetry can be. I was so impressed that I even awarded a celebration assembly REACH certificate for an outstanding poem.
Our Maths focus this week was statistics, which is such an important area as we encounter data, graphs and pie charts regularly in everyday life and future jobs. The children were highly engaged and successfully drew both line graphs and pie charts.
In PE, we focused on jumping skills. We had a shared session with Year 5 earlier in the week, followed by our Friday session where most of Year 6 worked on developing standing and running jumps. On Tuesday, our skill-based lesson focused on skipping, which is an essential skill for successful jumping.
We hope you have a fantastic long weekend and return refreshed and ready for our final week before SATs week.
Week commencing 20.4.26
Year 6 have had another fantastic week full of learning as we begin to gear up and feel ready for SATs week. The children have shown great focus, effort and resilience across the curriculum, and it has been lovely to see their confidence continuing to grow. Please make sure SATs breakfast has been paid for at the office - Monday 11th – Thursday 14th. This helps ensure the children start each day feeling calm, settled and ready to do their best.
English
In English this week, we explored free verse poetry. At first, the children found it strange that poems don’t have to rhyme, but they quickly embraced the freedom this style allows. Some amazing poetry has been created, using strong imagery inspired by natural scenes, and the creativity on display has been fantastic.
Maths
In Maths, we have completed our algebra unit and moved on to statistics. Alongside this, plenty of revision and recap has begun to ensure the children feel prepared for SATs. The children are working hard and approaching revision tasks with a positive attitude.
Science
In Science, the children have been classifying zoo animals based on their characteristics. They used their knowledge of animal groups such as mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish. They explained their reasoning clearly and used excellent scientific vocabulary.
DT
We are almost finished with our DT models, and the perseverance shown has been brilliant. The children demonstrated real resilience and problem‑solving skills, with a touch of glitter added too! The finished models will be ready to share with our Reception buddies (hopefully) next week, which the children are very excited about.
History
We have now finished our History unit, focusing on migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The children explored the differences between these groups and thought carefully about empathy and understanding. To finish the unit, they created welcoming posters, which showed kindness and thoughtfulness.
RE
In RE, our learning has focused on the Holy Spirit, which is a challenging concept to understand. The children thought carefully about what the Holy Spirit means today and what it meant for the twelve apostles/disciples, sharing ideas and reflections during class discussions.
PE
As a bonus, the children enjoyed an extra gymnastics session this week. They focused on creating sequences and showed increasing confidence, especially when vaulting and jumping with half and full turns onto the landing mat. This was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
Well done, Year 6, for another hardworking and successful week. We are very proud of all the effort being shown as we move closer to SATs week.Keep up the great work!
Week commencing 13.4.26
What a brilliant first week back it has been in Year 6! The classroom has been buzzing with enthusiasm, and it has been wonderful to see so many children already demonstrating our key values of resilience, empathy, aspirations, confidence and high expectations in everything they do.
In English, we launched straight into writing formal complaint letters. The children quickly showed great confidence and high aspirations as they explored formal language, persuasive techniques and structure. Their letters were incredibly imaginative and, it has to be said, they thoroughly enjoyed finding something to complain about! The effort and creativity on show really reflected the high expectations they set for themselves.
Maths focused on algebra, and the class approached their first full week of it with resilience and a positive mindset. Many were pleased to discover that algebra is not as tricky as it first sounds and is very similar to solving missing number boxes. It was fantastic to see confidence growing as the week went on and children supporting one another with empathy when learning something new.
In DT, we began our exciting vehicle project. Everyone now has a solid frame and a working pulley system, which is no small achievement. This lesson truly tested resilience, as not everything worked perfectly first time. However, the class persevered, tried again and learned from mistakes – exactly the attitude we aim to foster.
We are incredibly proud of two members of the class who went swimming this week. They both did so well and showed great confidence and determination – a brilliant achievement.
During PE, the children returned to gymnastics, focusing on vaulting. They listened carefully to instructions, supported each other and, thanks to their high expectations, everyone managed the vault successfully. Our coach, Ali, was very impressed with their effort and focus.
The Wildlife Quiz team worked together with excellent teamwork and empathy. Although they narrowly lost by just three points (so I’m told), they should be extremely proud of how well they collaborated and represented the class.
In RE, we explored the idea of the ‘Narrow Path’, discussing how it can be tricky to follow. Linking this to Lent, the children reflected thoughtfully on how this is a time to pause, reset and make positive choices – a lovely opportunity to connect empathy and resilience to everyday life.
Overall, it has been a superb start to the term, filled with learning, laughter and commitment. We are very excited for what the rest of this term has to bring!
