Spring 2 2025

Week beginning 7th April

Mrs Carr blog

We have had a pretty quiet week rolling up to the end of Spring 2!

The children have been learning away; using all their sticky knowledge and enjoying a sneak preview into our new topic of volcanoes!

We have ended the week with Stations of the Cross and an hour of REACH time which was just wonderful in this beautiful weather!

I wish you all a really happy Easter, and see you in 2 weeks for the shortest term I've ever experienced!
Week beginning 31st March
(Year 5 blog)

On Monday, we went to Rednock to watch their performance of "School of Rock". It was absolutely AMAZING- just like watching a West End production! We had to really remind ourselves that the actors were students at Rednock and some of them were not much older than ourselves! It was a really inspirational trip and gave some of us aspirations for the future!

This week, Mrs Carr has been practicing something with us called "sticky knowledge". We have had to repeat the sticky knowledge back to her throughout the lesson and give feedback to Mrs Howells about how we have found it. We have enjoyed it so much, we wanted to put it in our blog!
This week's sticky knowledge has been:
1000g =1 kg, 1000ml =1 l, a biography is a summary of someone's life written by someone else, Jesus loves us THIS much (hold out arms) because he stretched out his arms and died on the cross, AND William Tyndale translated the bible into English.

Speaking of William Tyndale, we studied him in history this week. We found his life really interesting and had lots of discussions about why we thought it was a bit silly he lost his life because he was making the Bible accessible for all. A few of us have visited the Tyndale monument in North Nibley and now if we visit it again, we will be able to recount our sticky knowledge!

Mrs Carr input: The children have been absolutely wonderful this week, really articulate and working hard on their learning. We haven't got many photos this week but I wanted to share a picture of your wonderful children working away in MOT this week. The focus on their faces says it all; lots of very engaged little learners this week!
Week beginning 24th March

I had to take the opportunity to write the Blog this week to tell you all about our trip on Monday to Dursley!
It was the BEST afternoon out with the children, and we have since had many emails from the people who helped make this trip possible about their incredible behaviour and enthusiasm.

We were so fortunate to have a gentleman from the Dursley Heritage Center do a walking tour with us. We visited parts of Dursley I didn't know existed (who knew that there was a spring that ran through Dursley?!) and the children were really excited when bits of learning that we had done in school were made reference to. For example, early on we saw R.A. Lister's grave which brought our recent lesson about Listers alive for them.

The children were also REALLY fortunate to see the upstairs of the Market house (opposite St James the Great Church) which was incredibly exciting! The children marvelled at the bits of Dursley's submarine, a charter from King Henry VIII and various other historical artefacts about Dursley.

After our walk, we were met by another gentleman in St James the Great, who gave us all a pink leaflet about the church and took us for a tour around. The children were very eager to show off their understanding of the local area; religion and saints which was so wonderful to see.
Again, the children were REALLY fortunate to go up to the Bell ringing room and see the ropes used to ring the bells.

The children absolutely loved the day and I am INCREDIBLY proud of them!

Thank you, as ever, to our parent volunteers who make these trips possible by driving the children (and adults) to the locations. Without them, we couldn't do local trips as the cost is extortionate for a coach nowadays!

If you are in Dursley, please do pop into the Heritage Centre or the Church and enjoy learning about this very diverse little town!
Week beginning 17th March (and week beginning 10th March)

Year 5 blog

We have had a really busy 2 weeks! Sorry about no blog last week, Mrs Carr wasn't in on Friday. But we will tell you all about British Science week (last week) first, and then this week second!

In British Science week, we were really lucky to have Andy from NRS to help us make fan boats. We used STEM to create an electrical circuit attached to a propeller, which made our boats glide through the water just by using air from the propeller. We learned a lot about forces around us which was really interesting.
We also had a really cool session by Renishaw, where we were able to do coding with Microbits. We "taught" them to play rock paper scissors which was so much fun!
Finally, we had a live lesson with astronaut Tim Peake about what it was like to be on the International Space Station. We also learned how astronauts prepare for Space Missions. We found it so interesting and loved seeing pictures of the world from space.

This week, we have been learning about converting measures such as kilometres into metres and the other way around. We have also done metres into centimetres; today we will be doing the other way around!

On Tuesday we had a STEM day by the Smallpiece trust in association with the RAF, and we made rockets. We learned about the technical names of the rocket and how to make them air tight so we could launch them. We've entered the competition to win tickets to the Royal International Air Tattoo too!

In RE we worked in groups to research three different charities that follow Jesus' corporal acts of Mercy. We made links with the Sacraments as well as reflecting how it will inspire us to follow in Jesus' footsteps better.

In DT, we are continuing to work on our project of designing logos for T-Shirts. We made stencils to try different techniques in order to decide which one we are going to choose for our final product.

We've had such a busy two weeks we are SO sleepy today! But there is more fun to be had today with Outdoor learning, History and more DT today!

See you next week!
Week beginning 3rd March
(Year 5 Blog)

In Science, we have been learning about human life cycles. We started at the beginning, looking at the growth of a baby in the womb. We were fascinated that we started off at the size of a poppy seed, and then finished off at the size of a pumpkin! Obviously we are much bigger now!

This week was WORLD BOOK DAY! We had the theme of cow, hippo, turtle, yearning, melancholy and tranquillity. We made a poster about what we yearn for (with a link to Catholic Social Teaching) and we wrote a poem about tranquillity. There were so many fun things throughout the day and it really helped us re-ignite our love of books and reading.

In Maths, we have been looking at percentages. We know that percent means out of 100 and today we were converting between fractions and percentages. For almost 5 days in a row, ALL of us have got onto the deepen its!

Next week is British Science week, so we have got A LOT to enjoy! We can't wait to tell you!
See you next week!
Week beginning 24th February

Welcome back to another term!

Spring 2 is by far my favourite term as we have got British Science week, World Book day and Easter preparations. The children have come back with such maturity; they really have excelled themselves this week! Their enthusiasm for learning is wonderful to see and this term's topic has certainly sparked much excitement!

We are going to be looking at our local area- the History of Dursley. Before this topic, I didn't realise quite the significance of Dursley throughout history and I cannot WAIT to show the children the hidden secrets that Dursley has to offer!

A trip letter will be coming out soon, so keep a look out for that :)

As ever, Year 5 have been busy with their learning as you can see in the pictures. Their determination to be the best they can be is really evident and I am very excited to see what this term has in store for us!

Year 5 are looking forward to updating you on all their excitement next week! There will be so much they will want to tell you!
