Week commencing 2nd May 2025
Even though it was a short week, it's been another jam-packed week for our Year 6s, and we couldn’t be prouder of their perseverance and ever-growing resilience.
With SATs just around the corner, we’ve been diving into short bursts of revision sessions with a positive mindset. We’ve kept things fun and active, from quick-fire quizzes to outdoor hunt the questions involving flags and Pokémon, which had everyone thinking on their feet. The children are developing confidence in their knowledge, showing that with the right encouragement and high expectations, they can rise to any challenge.
Over in PE, we’ve been channelling our inner athletes with long jump practise. There’s been a real buzz of excitement (and some impressive leaps!) as the children explored how to push themselves further—quite literally! This week has been about setting personal goals, showing resilience, and cheering each other on, building both skill and empathy along the way. In our second session, we worked on throwing too and considered how to shot put - we enjoyed watching an aspirational video of a ladies championship event.
In science, we’ve stepped into the unseen world of microbes. The children have been busy researching bacteria, viruses, and fungi, fascinated by how something invisible to the naked eye can have such a huge impact on the world. It’s sparked plenty of curiosity and inspired aspirations—some future microbiologists may just be in the making!
Our budding journalists had an exciting task this week: writing a newspaper report about an almost-disaster involving a ship and a lighthouse. Not only did they learn how to use both direct and indirect speech accurately, but they also developed a strong narrative voice.
In RE, we’ve been exploring the powerful story of Peter and his relationship with Jesus. The children have reflected deeply on how Peter’s journey—from denial to a renewed faith—shows us the power of transformation through love and belief. These discussions have been incredibly thoughtful, with pupils demonstrating empathy as they consider how people can grow and change, especially when supported by others and guided by faith.
Everywhere you look this week, the classroom has been filled with moments that reflect the virtues we hold dear: faith in ourselves and each other, hope for the future, and love for learning and growth. As we head into SATS week we’re full of pride for the journey they’ve taken so far—and full of hope for all that lies ahead. Thank you for your continued support. Let’s keep cheering them on!
Week commencing 28th April 2025
A great first week back and what weather we’ve had!
In Maths, we have been completing our final unit before SATS – statistics – and the children have been interpreting and drawing line graphs and pie charts. Here we need resilience as there are set ways to do this and if it is not accurate the data is represented incorrectly.
Our English lessons have been focused on completing our free verse poems linked to a surrealist image; then we have moved on to looking at newspaper reports. The children have watched a short clip linked to a near disaster at a lighthouse and next week they will be writing about this. The focus is on including direct and indirect speech – whilst they are reading try to encourage them to notice this.
Our first Athletics session was focused on running and different start positions – the children considered what the best stance is for them when they begin their running. They laughed lots when I asked them to start lying on the floor! We have Sports Day and District Sports events to prepare for – I hope the weather is this nice for these!
We have finished our DT project creating vehicles for the Reception class – we have had very high expectations when creating these and a lot of resilience as they haven’t always gone to plan! We spent time this afternoon evaluating our work and deciding what we would have done differently and what was successful. Everyone had a working model (at some point!) during the day.
A short week next week – please make sure they complete their homework and continue with their SATS books if they can.
