Spring Term 1 2025

Week beginning the 10th February 2025

This week in St. Joseph's class, we focused on the fascinating world of measurement. The students practiced using rulers to measure various objects, honing their skills in reading and recording lengths accurately. Additionally, we explored non-standard units of measurement, such as cubes, to help the children understand the concept of measurement in a more tangible way. The hands-on activities were engaging and allowed the students to see the practical applications of what they were learning.

In English, we delved into writing non-contemporary texts, drawing inspiration from the incredible fact files the students created for their homework. These fact files showcased their extensive knowledge and creativity, providing a rich foundation for their writing. The students demonstrated impressive research skills and a deep understanding of their chosen topics, which translated into their written work. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and the high quality of their writing.

This week was also Internet Safety Week, an important subject to help our students become more aware of how to stay safe online. The children learned about the potential risks of the internet and how to navigate it responsibly. We spoke about adverts and things that might pop up on screen and that the bets ting to do is to tell an adult straight away. We emphasised the importance of not sharing personal information. This knowledge is crucial in today's digital age, and the students are now better prepared to protect themselves online.

Week beginning 3rd February 2025

This week has been filled with exciting activities and learning opportunities. In our outdoor learning and art sessions, we explored the works of Bryan Nash Gill, focusing on spotting natural patterns. In PE, we concentrated on perfecting our forward rolls in gymnastics. Our Maths lessons were centered around measurement, while in English, we delved into non-chronological reports.

In Maths, we have been exploring the concepts of length, width, and height. We used vocabulary such as "taller than" and "shorter than" to compare different objects. We also noticed that even if objects are wider, it's important to specifically consider their height.

In English, we focused on non-chronological texts. We acted out our story maps, learning all about tigers, and practiced using conjunctions to enhance our writing. We discussed the structure of non-chronological reports, identifying key features such as titles, headings and factual information. Additionally, we worked on organising our ideas clearly and logically, ensuring that each section of our reports provided detailed and interesting information about tigers. This comprehensive approach helped us understand how to create informative and engaging non-chronological texts.

Week beginning the 27th January 2025
This week in Year 1 has been filled with fun and exciting activities! We've been working hard on our number bonds of 15 and 16, which has been both challenging and rewarding. In Religious Education, we've been learning about following in Jesus' footsteps, which has sparked some thoughtful discussions. We've also taken time to remind ourselves of what we now know about the UK, reinforcing our knowledge in a fun and engaging way. To top it all off, we've been getting creative by making collages using different materials and mediums, allowing us to express our artistic sides. It's been a fantastic week of learning and creativity!
In our art lessons this week, we've been focusing on using a variety of mediums to enhance our creative skills. We've explored oil pastels, water-colours, paint, pencil, colouring pencils, and even tried our hand at mono-printing. Our experiments didn't stop there; we applied these mediums to a range of different materials and textures, discovering how each one interacts uniquely. This hands-on approach is helping us improve our understanding of artistic techniques and how different tools can be used to create diverse effects. This exploration has also helped us create our own collages, allowing us to combine different elements into unique and expressive artworks. It's been an exciting journey of discovery and creativity!
In geography this week, we took some time to remind each other of what we've learned about the United Kingdom. We discussed both human and physical features, including capital cities, famous buildings, the rich culture, and the diverse landscape. To make our learning more interactive, we used this knowledge to write pretend postcards to someone who had never been to England before. Each of us picked our favourite fact to include in our postcards, explaining what it's like here. This activity not only reinforced our understanding but also allowed us to share our enthusiasm for the UK's unique characteristics.
Week beginning the 20th January 2025
This week, the children have been focusing on enhancing their computing skills. They've been getting familiar with the keyboard, learning how to type in their usernames and passwords, as well as their names on the laptops. It's been great to see their progress as they navigate the technology with increasing confidence and independence.

In PE, we've built on last week's activities by introducing new apparatus for the children to explore. They've been trying out different movements on the mats, and it's impressive how well they've adapted to the new equipment. Safety has been a priority, and the children have shown great awareness while using the apparatus, ensuring they keep themselves and their peers safe.

Additionally, the children have been putting in a lot of effort into their reading and phonics. They seem to be really enjoying the "secret sound of the day" activity, which has made learning more engaging for them. It's wonderful to see their enthusiasm for reading grow as they participate in these fun and interactive lessons!
Week beginning the 13th January 2025
In PE, we focused on learning safe ways to use our apparatus while applying the gymnastic skills we practiced in Wednesday's lesson. We explored different body shapes, including tuck, star, and pike, which helped us understand how to control our movements effectively. Using both the mats and various pieces of apparatus, we created these shapes, enhancing our balance and coordination. This hands-on experience not only improved our gymnastics skills but also emphasized the importance of safety when working with equipment in the gym.
Week beginning Wednesday 8th January
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely, restful Christmas. This week has been a short one, but we've packed it full of fun activities that have brought us together. We've been on an exciting hunt around the school using satellite maps to locate where north is, which helped us learn about navigation in a hands-on way! We've also used our bodies to create animals, linking this to dance movements that allow us to express ourselves creatively and explore the joy of movement. Additionally, we took time to reflect on the blessing of Jesus in the temple, and as a heartfelt activity, we created our own "God bless you" cards for our loved ones. Overall, it’s been a wonderful start to the year, filled with learning, creativity, and a sense of community! We can't wait to see what the rest of the term brings.
In science, we've been learning about different materials by examining various objects that we're familiar with. We identified the materials each object is made from, which helped us connect our everyday experiences to scientific concepts. After that, we did some investigations to explore the characteristics of each material, such as their hardness, flexibility, and whether they were rough or dull. This hands-on approach not only deepened our understanding of the properties of materials but also made the learning process more engaging and relevant to our daily lives.
In RE, we learned about the story of finding Jesus in the temple, which sparked interesting discussions about Jesus' hidden childhood. We explored the significance of this story and how it reflects his early life. To help us remember the story better, we created puppets that represented the characters, which made the learning experience more interactive and fun. Finally, we performed the story to the class using our puppets, allowing us to bring the narrative to life and share our understanding with our classmates.
